During the late Eastern Han Dynasty, Zhang Daoling—the founding patriarch of Taoism—practiced cultivation in Sichuan and healed the people with talismanic water. Historical records state that he "used crafted talismans to cure ailments," earning him the revered title "Celestial Master Zhang" (Zhang Tianshi).

This tradition was carried forward by later Taoist priests, who often inscribed talismans with the "Celestial Master" characters during the Dragon Boat Festival for protection.

In the Tang Dynasty, Emperor Xuanzong commissioned the painter Wu Daozi to create the first official portrait of Zhong Kui, establishing the iconic Taoist imagery for warding off evil. By the Song and Yuan Dynasties, Celestial Master talismans merged with Zhong Kui’s depictions, evolving into a mature artistic style where "talismans contained imagery, and imagery embodied talismans."
